Why is it always about the driver?

Few days ago we have started to see the streets in Amman crowded with the posters of the new campaign to prevent car accidents that is causing the death of a lot of innocent people “Kafa”. From my point of view I hate the way they are representing the case to the public with the picture of the grave.

Regardless the way that the campaign is being represented to the people, there is some few points I want to mention in this article. The main one is: “Why it’s always about the driver?”. Before speaking about the idealities, I will be realistic; I was driving on my way to my office and listening to Mohamad Al-Wakil’s program on radio Fann, as most of you know; his program is specialized in receiving the calls of the people, to take their complaints and to try to solve their problems. That day a man called Al-Wakil and started to talk about his hopeless case problem! Do you know what was that problem? He was complaining about the iron fence below pedestrian bridge as it is preventing him from passing the street! Now, let’s talk about the idealities, why should I care about that man and a lot of people like him when they are not even trying to protect themselves? Is it all because they are innocent? No they are not. People who are not using their minds and don’t care about their lives are not innocent at all.

The second one is a story that happened on last Friday’s morning when I heard the voice of a lot of people on the street. I looked through the window I found out a group of cyclers riding their bicycles; it was an amazing view for me. They were followed by some policemen on their motorcycles and an ambulance. They went away and I was able to see some cars and the last policeman on the motorcycle who was protecting them supposedly, I thought that he had eyes on the back of his head, do you know why? Because he was driving and looking behind him; but suddenly I realized that I was mistaken when he hit one of the cars in front of him. Directly I remembered that cop who told me “don’t even try to look behind you when you are driving”, when I was doing my driving license test. And that was the reason behind getting the red paper from him as an indicator that I failed in the test. I assume that the same policeman who hit the car after a while started to issue tickets.

I need to know, why do we have to stand such a law that always consider the pedestrian innocent people and the driver is a murderer in all cases. Don’t we have a sidewalk on each side of any street in Jordan? Isn’t it the right place for the pedestrian? Why these people are always considered oppressed? Aren’t they breaking the rules when they walk on the streets as they have their own place to walk on? I think that the law is completely injustice and needs to be reconsidered.
